Vacancies at BALPA

The British Airline Pilots’ Association

| DIRECTIONS | APPLICATION FORM |

The British Air Line Pilots’ Association (BALPA) is the national representative body for aviation professional pilots flying with UK airlines. As a specialist organisation we protect and improve the professional status, pay and conditions of our members, now numbering more than 10,000.

The Association is now seeking.....

Scheduling Officer

Background
BALPA is a strong membership driven organisation representing commercial pilots in the UK. A key component of the work we do is to campaign and negotiate to provide more stability over their rosters, to have more influence over their individual lifestyle. This comes at a time when operators are trying to squeeze more out of the pilot workforce by exploiting the capacity of IT-driven rostering systems, but whilst pilots wish to be productive there is a growing feeling that sophisticated systems are being used in very unsophisticated ways.

Opportunity
In support of our aims we are looking to recruit a lifestyle and scheduling officer. This is a new post and, for someone who wants to break away from the monotony of relating the letter of the law and challenging assumptions, together with a fellow scheduling officer, will report to the BALPA Head of Scheduling. The strengthening of this team is reflective of the key importance which BALPA attaches to this area of work.
He/she should have an approachable personality, good communication skills and be able to work effectively as part of various teams either at national level or with the Company Councils where BALPA is recognised. Having substantial experience working in a rostering/crewing department and with specialist knowledge of rostering and crewing systems and the related IT systems this person would have demonstrable expertise and skills to move to the senior roll.

He/she will support the continuous improvement of systems for both planning and day-to-day crewing and support the Head of Scheduling in the development and support of Company Scheduling Agreements
In addition he/she will liaise with BALPA Company Councils and individual members over queries to both general CAP371 rules and Company Scheduling Agreements
He or she will have detailed functional knowledge of:

• at least one of the following systems: Carmen, AIMS, RM, Maestro
• running what-if analysis and system report production and the analysis of data for stability, workload distribution and alternative parameters selection
• manpower planning
• detailed knowledge of CAP371

Public Policy Research Officer

Background
BALPA as the UK’s flight crew union and professional association is a key stakeholder within the aviation industry. We have over 10,000 members and are involved in direct relationships with most of the UK’s airlines. These range from the blue chip giants such as BA and Easy jet to small helicopter companies operating regionally. We represent professional pilots in every aspect of their work.

Opportunity
BALPA has always maintained a strong policy and research capability. We’ve submitted to government on everything from the pension taxation cap to mergers and acquisition, air traffic control and privatisation to Drug and Alcohol polices. Recently we contributed a major report on aviation and the Environment. Our research needs range from research on pay and benefits trends, pilot recruitment and “lifestyle”, to detailed research on health and safety issues. In all of these activities you will be working and co-ordinating with our specialist committees and full time staff. You will need to be both numerate and have the ability to write clear and cogent reports for a variety of audiences.

You will be working in a dynamic and forward looking organisation. The policy research is newly located within our marketing and communication team in recognition that this is an active and dynamic role rather than a “back room”. Working within this team also brings opportunities to both develop your research skills as well as your communications and marketing abilities. You will be exposed to all manner of business and policy issues that will help your future career development.

We are now seeking a graduate student who wishes to gain experience in policy work. To undertake this role you will be hungry to grow and have some of the following attributes:

• Good degree at a UK. US or commonwealth/English speaking university in social sciences but with economics, politics and business studies particularly useful. An MBA would also be a useful additional qualification.

• A keen interest in policy, research and consultancy as a career

• An understanding and engagement with policy issues as they impact representative organisations.

• Keen antennae for debates and dialogues we need to engage with

• Good understanding and familiarity with social science methodology

• An interest in aviation or a desire to learn
